During 10-Days Celebration of Ganesh Utsav

During this 10-day duration of Ganesh Chaturthi, there are many rituals performed. Among them we can broadly classify them as 4 key rituals:

1. Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: Avahana and Pran Pratishtha Ritual

The journey of sanctifying the Ganpati idol commences with the Avahana and Pran Pratishtha Ritual. It is the very first step embarked upon by devoted worshippers after invoking the divine lamp, known as ‘Deep-Prajwalan,’ and making a heartfelt Sankalpa, or vow.

Lord Ganesha is reverently invited into the sacred space through the recitation of mantras, infusing life into the idol whether it resides within a pandal, temple, or one’s own cherished abode.

2. Shodashopachara Ganesh Chaturthi Ritual

The subsequent stage involves the Shodashopachara Ganesh Chaturthi Ritual, a profound puja comprising sixteen sacred steps. In the Sanskrit language, ‘shodasha’ signifies ‘sixteen,’ while ‘upachara’ translates to ‘devout offering to the lord.’ This ritual is a meticulously crafted process of devotion.

The idol is bathed in a sacred concoction of milk, ghee, honey, curd, and sugar, known as ‘panchamrit snan.’

Following this purifying bath, the idol is anointed with scented oil and the holy Ganga jal. New vastra, or clothing, is adorned upon the idol with great love and care, accompanied by offerings of flowers, unbroken rice (Akshata), garlands, sindoor, and chandan (sandalwood paste).

The idol is adorned and worshipped devoutly, with offerings that include modak, betel leaves, coconut (naivedya), the illumination of incense sticks and diyas (lamps), and the recitation of hymns and mantras.

3. Ganesh Chaturthi Uttarpuja Ritual

The Ganesh Chaturthi Uttarpuja Ritual is a cherished ceremony performed just before the visarjan, the moment of bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha.

This phase of the celebration is marked by boundless joy and devotion, attracting participants of all age groups.

Whether in pandals, temples, or the warmth of one’s own home, Ganesha Chaturthi is observed with overflowing happiness.

People come together to sing, dance, and illuminate the night sky with fireworks, infusing the atmosphere with jubilation.

The deity is worshipped with profound devotion during this heartfelt farewell. The ritual encompasses a sequence of steps, including the Niranjan aarti, the offering of Pushpanjali (flowers), and the act of Pradakshina (circumambulation), all accompanied by the melodious chant of mantras.

Ganesh Utsav, with its rich tapestry of rituals and fervent devotion, stands as a testament to the deep-seated love and reverence that devotees hold for Lord Ganesha.

It is a time of spiritual connection and communal celebration, where the divine presence of Lord Ganesha fills hearts with devotion and unbounded joy.
